When does your roof need re-pointing?

One of the most common and important jobs in the roof restoration process is re-pointing. To understand what this means, allow us to explain the different roofing terms.

The ridge cap is the triangular row of thick rounded tiles that sit at the top of the roof valley and acts as a major protection against water and wind. Without ridge caps, the flashing would bear most of the impact and likely lead to roof leaks. The ridge caps are held in place by mortar - which is a mix of sand and cement sitting beneath it. To stop water getting in between the ridge caps,  a flexible sealer called pointing is used to guard it.

After being exposed to harsh weather over time, the roof and the ridge caps are prone to getting mould, lichen and moss on it. This usually will weaken the pointing as well as making the bedding of mortar less stable. If nothing is done, then it is likely the ridge caps will start breaking off and water will start to seep into the cracks.

After removing all the debris with the roof cleaning process, the ridge caps are then removed and the mortar beneath it is replaced. We use high quality mortar usually a mix of roofers loam and cement and bed this so that the ridge caps have a firm foundation on top of the roof. We then take a flexible pointer and spread it evenly on the sides of the ridge caps so that it is fully secure against any wind or water.

Rebedding and repointing requires a lot of care, and skill to apply properly. If done correctly, it is something that will make your roof much stronger to withstand the elements.
